We are excited to announce the NMALGBTIC (New Mexico Association on LGBTQ Issues in Counseling) 3rd annual conference!
THEME: RAINBOW ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
The goal of this conference is to draw on the unique strengths of our collective community and our fellow counselors to inspire growth, efficacy, and diversity through the lifespan of the LGBTQ+ community.
The conference is on Saturday, September 21st from 9:00am-5:00pm. The conference will be held at Media Arts Collaborative Charter School in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Our keynote speaker is Nandi Baldwin, LMHC
Nandi is one of our very own. She is the former NMALGBTIC president and is a strong advocate and has a passion for LGBTQ issues in counseling. Nandi will be presenting over lunch on LGBT Ideology Made Personal:
The ability to be oneself as an LGBTQ individual has changed over the generations based on society’s acceptance levels. One person’s coming out story does not speak to everyone’s story. Generational differences have a great impact on one’s experience as a queer individual. What we’ve found to be similar across the board is the Cass Model. Each person should be treated with love, dignity and respect and yet often times due to our society’s one view on how life should be lived our LGBTQ community has not experienced such niceties. Parents grieve when there children come out as LGBTQ and yet this is the same child you raised and have loved until this day. The shock of learning your child is “different” may have a “difficult life” is hard for parents to grasp. These are the same beliefs many LGBTQ individuals struggle with before they come out. Why do I have to be different? Am I a sinner bound to live a sinful life? Will I be hated, discriminated against, experience violence because of who I am? The questions LGBTQ individuals have asked themselves have different some over the decades and for the most part have lessened but not by much. There may be less violence experienced by the community but it is still very present. We will take a look at the Cass Model and generational differences on what it means to come out and live life as an LGBTQ person in today’s society.
